Senior Ship Operator Trainer/Assessor

About the Opportunity

As the Senior Operator Trainer/Assessor for Austal Defence Australia (ADA), you’ll be responsible for leading the ship specific Operating Support and Training (OS&T) team, playing a key role in preparing crews to safely and effectively operate their Mission System. This role supports capability ‘introduction into service’ by conducting operating task analysis, shaping Mission System design, and developing the operating procedures and training needed for successful handover to the customer.

Working closely with subcontractors, customer crews, and IPS disciplines, the Senior Operator T/A ensures all operators are mission ready and that operating documentation, training curriculum, and technical data are fully integrated within the IPS framework. The role also provides operational leadership; mentoring junior T/As and mariner trainees, and collaborates with the OS&T Lead and Maintenance T/A to deliver a coherent, high quality operating support solution.

What’s Involved

• Analyse and document Support System operating requirements so they are traceable, integrated across IPS elements, and used to shape procedures, HSI, workforce planning, training, safe operations, and customer handover.
• Plan and deliver the Training Continuum in line with SADL/ADDIE, ensuring trainees are supervised, assessments are accurate, training artefacts are current, and operator training meets contract needs.
• Provide complete, evidence based IPS inputs across design, training, manpower, technical data, and facilities; ensure compliance with contract and regulatory requirements; coordinate with IPS and engineering teams; and close audit findings on time.
• Coordinate and sequence Operating and Training Technical Data, so it is traceable, compliant, fit for purpose, configuration managed, and includes integrated IETPs.
• Mentor junior T/As, customer crew, and seafarers in day to day Mission System husbandry, maintaining high operating standards throughout IIS and achieving customer ready acceptance.

You’ll Need 

• Eligibility to obtain a Baseline AGSVA Security Clearance (Australian citizenship required).
• TAE40116 or TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or higher equivalent).
• Demonstrated leadership capability, including supervising instructors and coordinating training delivery.
• At least 5 years’ maritime training and assessment experience (e.g., OOW, Deck operations, Integrated Rating).
• At least 3 years’ Defence training and assessment experience or equivalent.
• Master <45m Near Coastal (AMSA‑endorsed) or working toward an equivalent maritime qualification. (Desirable)
• Experience with Learning Management Systems, e‑learning development, or simulation‑based training. (Desirable)
