About the roleAustal are looking for a Legal Counsel who will be working closely with the Senior Legal Counsel, Commercial Manager and General Counsel. This role is responsible for providing the company with legal advice, to assist in the negotiation and execution of contracts, management of risk, resolution of disputes, governance and ensure compliance with applicable legislation.  Key objectives & responsibilities include:Contracts and TendersGood understanding of contractual issuesComprehensive and clearly worded agreementsHigh level of accurate, commercially strategic advice and supportGood working customer relationships are maintainedAll material risk are identified and acceptable conditions negotiatedFacilitates successful conclusion of agreementsCompany Secretarial ComplianceUnderstanding of, or willingness to learn, principles of ASX Listing RulesLitigation and ArbitrationCost effective use of external legal resourcesUnnecessary litigation avoidedSettlement is commercially defensible and in the interests of Austal and shareholdersInsuranceAbility to prepare, track and manage insurance claims where appropriateGovernance and ReportingGood understanding of governance requirements across the Group and the ability to update relevant procedures and reports where changes in legislation require samePromotion and championing of ESG activities into the businessEnterprise and Project Risk ManagementConsistent application and assessment of risk across all levels of the businessGeneral Legal AdviceAdvice is legally accurate and position taken is defensibleAdvice is business oriented and consistent with Austal’s business strategyAdvice is concentrated on areas of greatest efficiency/greatest value addIn house counsel is seen as a value add team member Required Skills / Experience / Attributes:Hold a Construction safety induction (white card).Tertiary qualification in Law and requirements enabling admission to practice in Australia.Minimum of five (5) years PQE in corporate/commercial environment with a full exposure to financial legal matters.Experience in resolving contractual disputes essential.Demonstrated strong understanding of the core principles of contract law, construction law and Corporations law.
